CONTEMPORARY, HIP HOP, TAP & JAZZ
Contemporary Dance
Contemporary dance is a popular, dynamic, and ever-evolving style of concert dance that incorporates elements from other genres, such as ballet, jazz, modern, and lyrical. It's known for its emphasis on fluidity, freedom of movement, and emotional expression, and it encourages dancers to use their own interpretations and creativity. Contemporary dance is often less rigid than other styles, and dancers may break guidelines from other styles while building their own foundation. Some techniques used in contemporary dance include:
- Ballet-inspired leg movements
- Fall and recovery
- Floor work
- Improvisation
- Manipulating time, rhythm, space, gravity, breath, and energy
Beginning Contemporary - Ages 7+ or ABT Level 1 and 2
Tuesdays, 6:30 - 7:30 pm
Intermediate Contemporary - Ages 9+ or ABT Levels 2 and 3
Mondays, 6:00 - 7:00 pm
Advanced Contemporary - Ages 11+ (ABT Levels 4+)
Thursdays, 7:00 - 8:00pm
Adult Contemporary, Ages 13+, any experience level
Tuesdays, 8:00 - 9:00 pm
Dress Code - Black leotard, no tights or convertible tights; barefoot; hair pulled back/up, turners optional; contemporary dance socks, optional
Hip Hop
Hip hop dance is a street dance style that originated in New York City in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It's characterized by its freestyle movements, unique rhythmic combinations, and integration of complex movements and music.Hip hop dance is often performed to hip hop music, and can include a variety of styles, such as breaking, locking, popping, and krumping, each with their own distinct rhythms and move.
Beginning Hip Hop, Ages 5+
Wednesday, 5:30 - 6:30 pm
Intermediate/Advanced/Adult Hip Hop, Ages 10+ (or with permission)
Mondays, 5:30 - 6:30 pm
Dress code- Clean black athletic or hip hop shoes; black long sweat pants; white or black loose fitting t-shirt; hair pulled up

Jazz
Jazz dance is characterized by its fast pace, call and response format, and incorporation of classical ballet movements. Dancers respond to the music with their bodies, changing their movements to the musicians' improvisations. Key movements in jazz dance include the jeté, or leap, and the pivot, where one foot is placed in front of the other and then the direction is changed.
Beginning Jazz Technique
Thursdays, 5:30 - 6:30 pm, Ages 7+ (or with permission for younger students)
Advanced Jazz Technique
Tuesdays, 4:30 - 5:45 pm, Ages 10+, ABT Levels 3B+, or with permission for younger students.
Intermediate Jazz Technique
Saturdays, 11:30 - 12:30 pm, Ages 8+, ABT Levels 2+ or with permission
Dress Code - Black leotard, tights, black or tan jazz shoes, hair pulled up/back in a ballet bun.
